Directors’ Message

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to our programs, the International Doctoral Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IDAS) and the International Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies (IMAS) at National Chengchi University. Both programs represent postgraduate study opportunities unique in Taiwan; they are fully taught in English and offer an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of the Asia-Pacific region.

These programs focus on research and teaching and place heavy emphasis on the combination of theory and practice. Students of IDAS and IMAS can choose from a wide range of courses, some offered by us, and other classes, also offered in English, by other departments at NCCU.

The vast majority of the IDAS and IMAS faculty are affiliated with departments and graduate institutes of the College of Social Sciences and the Institute of International Relations. National Chengchi University is Taiwan’s pre-eminent university in the realm of social sciences and humanities. IDAS and IMAS are supported by the best faculty members and research fellows available.

The specializations of the IDAS and IMAS faculty cover, among other areas, anthropology and ethnology, economics and public finance, developmental studies, international relations and security, labor relations, political science, public administration, policy analysis, sociology, and social welfare – a very broad range indeed.

Dr. Ching-Ping Tang, PhD
Director, IDAS Program

Hsiao-Pong Liu, PhD
Director, IMAS Program

During Fall 2011, the IDAS curriculum was expanded to offer four tracks or concentrations from which students can choose courses: political economy, society and culture, public governance and public policy, and international relations. Students can mix and match courses to deepen their understanding of many and various issues related to the Asia-Pacific region and to craft their own study plan. The new track structure will indeed provide students with enhanced opportunities to meet their educational, research and professional needs, and take better advantage of the expertise of our renown faculty.

We believe that IDAS and IMAS, with a clear goal of helping the students better understand Asia and its important role in global affairs, are strong graduate program options.
